Learning to Teach Pilates

Pilates has rapidly become the most popular modality of exercise.  Hollywood movie stars swear by it, Infomercials guarantee it, and the wealthy want it.  With Pilates based exercises rocketing to the forefront of exercise techniques, there has become a great demand for Pilates instructors and only a few places to find them.

What does it take to become a Pilates Instructor?   This is a question that should be asked by every client before their first experience of Pilates. The answer that their instructor gives, will inform the client of how qualified of a Pilates instructor they are working with. The Pilates method of exercise is very in-depth and is very influential on the body’s posture.  With this in mind, a professional Pilates instructor should have a certification from a Pilates school whose curriculum  consists of Anatomy, biomechanics of the body and a strong understanding of why an individual is performing each exercise.

Going to the Mat

When learning to teach Pilates, you must first start by learning the foundation in which the exercises are derived from.  Originally, Joseph Pilates developed exercises that individuals would be able to do without the need for apparatus or external forces. To truly understand the works of Joseph Pilates, you must look further than learning a few calisthenic-like exercises.  You must learn the reasons for the exercises and what the purpose is for each of the exercises.

At Body & Core Pilates, our mat education is made up of a four-day (24 hour) course.  Consisting of anatomy, concepts, movement principles, ethics and 26 basic to intermediate Pilates mat exercises.  After this intensive course is completed, the student must fulfill 20 hours of internship and pass a practical exam to receive our significant teaching credential.

The Educational Journey begins

Once Body & Core Pilates mat weekend intensives are completed, the student will have a better understanding and be able to determine if this is a career opportunity they would like to follow.  To become a professional  Pilates instructor, you must acquire an aptitude of several skills.  The average client that is new to the Pilates Method, will more than likely have some kind of physical limitation.  Whether it is a spinal herniation, a shoulder impingement  or  just poor postural alignment.  It is the Pilates professional’s responsibility to know their scope of practice and just what ability level their client can work within.

The equipment education of Body & Core Pilates consists of 7 courses; 6 intensive weekends and (1) 10 hour anatomy course that is spread over 5 classes.  The 6 intensive weekends cover basic, intermediate and advanced exercises, biomechanics, posture analysis and how to work with special populations.  Along with these courses, students must complete 400 hours of internship consisting of observation of Master Instructors, self-practice under the supervision of Master Instructors, Assisted teaching and be able to successfully perform and teach Pilates movements on both the floor and equipment.  To conclude this portion of our education, a three hour written exam and a practical exam is administrated.
